LONDON (ICIS)--Foster Wheeler has won a $500m (€380m) contract for work to expand and upgrade two refineries in Kuwait, the Switzerland-based international petrochemicals engineering firm said on Wednesday.

Foster Wheeler said under the deal with Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) it will provide project management and consultancy (PMC) services to upgrade and raise the combined throughput capacity of Kuwait’s Mina Al-Ahmadi and Mina Abdullah refineries by 264,000 bbl/day to 800,000 bbl/day.

KNPC’s project – known as “Clean Fuels Project” – aims to increase conversion of fuel oil to higher value products in order to meet market demand and tighter specifications for sulphur content in transportation fuels, Foster said.

The project is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2018.

“The Clean Fuels Project is a critical mega project that will shape the future of Kuwait’s refining capability while driving the highest standards of commitment to the environment,” said Fahed Salem Al Ajmi, KNPC’s chairman and managing director.
