US December auto sales up by 9.7%, year’s sales up by 13%

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US December sales of passenger cars and light trucks increased by 9.7% year on year, and yearly sales rose by 13%, an industry publication said on Thursday.

Autodata reported that sales of passenger cars and light trucks in December totalled 1.36m units, up from 1.24m units sold in the same month a year ago.

For the year, there were 14.49m units sold, compared with 12.78m units sold in 2011.

The US automobile industry comprises one of the major segments for chemicals such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), nylon 6,6, polycarbonate (PC) and several synthetic fibres and paints and coatings.

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) estimates that each automobile contains an average of $3,297 (€2,506) worth of chemicals.
