SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Taiwan’s CPC Corp may not need to buy spot methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) this year as the company has ample supply from its term contracts, a company source said on Wednesday.
“It is likely that we do not need any spot material this year. We are comfortably covered by terms ...," the source said.
MTBE is used as an additive to boost the octane level in gasoline.
“Our spot [MTBE] requirement has decreased since our RFCC [residual fluid catalytic cracker] has started up last November. The gasoline produced is of 92 RON grade and does not require any MTBE for blending,” the source said.
Prior to the start-up of the RFCC unit, which is located at the company’s Dalin refinery, CPC was buying 5,000-10,000 tonnes of spot MTBE on a monthly basis, the source said.
