HOUSTON (ICIS)--US-based Rentech Nitrogen has completed a 15% urea capacity expansion at its plant in East Dubuque, Illinois, the producer said on Tuesday.

Rentech said that it increased the plant’s urea capacity by 21,900 tonnes/year.

The additional urea will be converted into diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and sold to Yara North America, Rentech said.

Yara has exclusive rights to purchase DEF produced at the Rentech facility under a long-term agreement. Rentech began supplying Yara with DEF last year.

The total capital cost of Rentech’s urea/DEF expansion project was about $7m (€5.3m), the company added.

DEF is injected into the exhaust of diesel vehicles to reduce nitrous oxide emissions.

US DEF demand is forecast to rise to 750m gallons in 2015 and 1.3bn gallons in 2019, compared with about 50m gallons in 2010, Rentech said, citing a projection by the US Engine Manufacturers Association.
