HOUSTON (ICIS)--Rigid urethane foam insulation demand in ?xml:namespace>China is projected to grow by 9% per year, reaching 2m tonnes in 2016, a market research study reported on Tuesday.
The increase will be supported by the construction and manufacturing sectors at the expense of polystyrene (PS), with gains driven by improved insulating properties, according to The Freedonia Group, a Cleveland-based industry research firm.
Additional gains will be limited in China because of the high price of urethanes, Freedonia said.
Foamed rigid urethanes made up 57% of all foamed plastics insulation in China in 2011. They are widely used in appliances such as refrigerators and freezers, refrigerated vehicles and warehouses, and pipeline applications.
The projections for rigid urethane foam use in China in 2016 include 1.375m tonnes of sprayed-on applications and 0.625m tonnes of rigid board, Freedonia said.
