Brazil 2012 caustic soda consumption drops 1.0% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Brazil consumed 2.483m dry metric tonnes (dmt) of liquid caustic soda in 2012, down by 1.0% from the 2.509m dmt consumed during 2011, the country’s association of chlor-alkali industries, Abiclor, reported on Tuesday.

Brazil’s domestic production of liquid caustic soda in 2012 was 1.375m dmt, 1.6% higher than the 1.353m dmt produced in 2011, Abiclor said.

Liquid caustic soda imports were 1.126m dmt in 2012, down by 4.1% from 1.174m dmt imported in 2011. The US was Brazil’s principal source with 1.069m dmt exported there this year, corresponding to 95.0% share of imports into Brazil.

Major markets consuming liquid caustic soda in Brazil in 2012 were paper and cellulose with 314,771 dmt, chemical/petrochemical with 227,454 dmt, aluminium with 120,519 and metallurgy with 71,421 dmt.

Demand for caustic soda in Brazil is stable from key consuming sectors, sources said.

Caustic soda producers in Brazil are Braskem, Carbocloro and Dow Brasil.
