TOKYO (ICIS)--Japan’s production of oriented polypropylene (PP) film rose by 8.2% year on year to 17,619 tonnes in December 2012, official industry data showed on Tuesday.
Domestic shipments of oriented PP film increased by 9% to 17,776 in December from the same period a year earlier, according to data from the Japan Polypropylene Film Industry Association.
Among domestic shipments, those for food packaging rose by 11% year on year to 13,864 tonnes.
However, Japanese oriented PP film exports fell by 33% to 268 tonnes from the previous year, the data showed.
In total, the country produced 222,404 tonnes of oriented PP film in 2012, a 4.3% decline from 2011, according to the association.
While domestic shipments of oriented PP film fell by 3.5% to 217,739 tonnes in 2012 from the previous year, exports were down by 8.7% to 4,018 tonnes.
Meanwhile, the country’s output of cast PP film increased by 3.9% year on year to 12,325 tonnes in December 2012, separate data from the association showed.
Domestic shipments of cast PP film was up by 7% to 12,129 tonnes in December from a year earlier, while exports declined by 22% to 346 tonnes.
Among the domestic shipments, 10,034 tonnes of cast PP film was used for food packaging, a 7.9% increase from the same period a year earlier.
Japan’s total production of cast PP film fell by 9.4% to 146,712 tonnes in 2012 from 2011, according to the association.Domestic shipments of cast PP film totalled 145,853 tonnes, down by 4.8% year on year, while exports declined by 2.7% to 4,269 tonnes, the data showed.
