Ascend reports emissions event at Texas ACN plant

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Ascend Performance Materials’ Chocolate Bayou acrylonitrile (ACN) plant in southeast Texas experienced a process upset Friday morning, according to a report made available on Monday by the state’s environmental agency.

The event lasted just over two hours on Friday morning at the plant located in Alvin, near Houston, according to the report Ascend filed with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

Acend's spokesperson was unavilable for comment on the event on Monday.

According to the report, an estimated 200lb of ACN, 100lb  of ammonia, 20lb  of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), 200lb of propylene and assorted other materials were emitted to the atmosphere from the AN 3 unit.

The facility has an annual ACN capacity of 500,000 tonnes/year, according to ICIS Plants and Projects.
