EU chemicals production in December up by 0.9% - Eurostat

LONDON (ICIS)--Chemicals production in the EU rose by 0.9% month on month in December, European statistics agency Eurostat said on Wednesday.

Eurozone chemicals production in December was up by 0.3%, it added.

The Eurostat data shows that chemicals production increased by 0.7% in the 27-member EU in December year on year, while production rose by 1.3% in the 17-member eurozone.

Europe’s total industrial production picked up in December, growing by 0.5% in the EU and by 0.7% in the eurozone on a seasonally-adjusted basis compared with November. In November, production fell by 0.6% in the EU and 0.7% in the eurozone.

“Among the Member States for which data are available, industrial production rose in 14, fell in six and remained stable in Spain, France and Romania. The highest increases were registered in Ireland (+8.5%), Latvia and Slovenia (both +2.7%), and the largest decreases in Slovakia (-4.4%) and Denmark (-2.3%),” Eurostat said.

On an annual basis, industrial production in December was down by 2.3% in the EU and 2.4% in the eurozone.

“Among the Member States for which data are available, industrial production fell in 15 and rose in eight. The largest decreases were registered in Spain (-6.9%), Italy (-6.6%), the Czech Republic (-5.8%) and Poland (-5.4%), and the highest increases in Latvia (+10.7%), Malta (+10.3%) and Lithuania (+9.1%),” the agency added.

Compared with 2011, the average production index for 2012 dropped by 2.4% in the eurozone and by 2.1% in the EU, Eurostat said.
