SINGAPORE (ICIS)--South Korea’s LG Chem started up its new phenol/acetone plant in Daesan on 13 February, a company source said on Friday.

The plant, which has a phenol nameplate capacity of 300,000 tonnes/year and an acetone nameplate capacity of 180,000 tonnes/year, is currently running at 60% capacity, the source said.

LG Chem is ramping up production at the new phenol/acetone facility and is targeting full operation in March, the source added.

The start-up of the new plant is anticipated to exert downward pressure on spot phenol prices in Asia, market sources said.

Phenol was traded at $1,500-1,600/tonne CFR (cost & freight) China amid subdued buying interest and sluggish demand on 8 February, according to ICIS data.
