SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Shanxi provincial government announced on Wednesday that Changzhi city mayor Zhang Bao has been removed from office following the chemical pollution caused by an aniline leak in late December 2012.
Nearly nine tonnes of aniline leaked from Tianji Coal Chemical Industry Group’s aniline unit in Changzhi city on 31 December 2012 into the local Zhuozhang river and the local water supply was cut off for almost half a month as a result. In addition, vice-general manager of Tianji Coal Chemical Industry Group Wang Yanling was demoted because of the incident, according to a statement on the local government website.
Shen Xufeng and Yang Fujin, directors of the Local Environmental Protection Bureau and Safety Administration, also have been removed from their positions, the statement said.
Aniline is widely used in the manufacturing of methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) and it can be toxic to humans.
