HOUSTON (ICIS) --US maleic anhydride (MA) exports were 3,160 tonnes in January, a 46% drop from the same month one year earlier, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Friday.
However, January’s figure was 26% more than the 2,505 tonnes of MA shipped in December, the ITC said.
January exports generally show a rise over December, which is typically one of the slowest months of the year. Downstream demand tends to pick up as producers of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR), or glass fibre, begin ramping up production for use in automobile and boat manufacturing.
Mexico was by far the top destination for US MA exports, at 1,621 tonnes. It was followed by Canada (437 tonnes), Columbia (335 tonnes) and Germany (258 tonnes).
Major US MA producers include Huntsman, LANXESS, Ashland and Flint Hills Resources.
