HOUSTON (ICIS)—US January exports of epoxy resins fell by 8.5% year on year, according to data released by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Friday.
US January 2013 exports were 10,267 tonnes, down from 11,217 tonnes a year ago.
Month on month, exports fell by 13% from 11,832 tonnes in December 2012.
The biggest reason for the fall in January volumes was due to weak demand overseas, largely from buyers retreating to the sidelines ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays.
Additionally, US material was unattractive to overseas buyers because of high prices stemming from feedstock costs.
On the import side, volumes also fell year on year, as supply tightness overseas led to less material availability for US buyers.
January 2013 imports were 6,298 tonnes, down by 12% year on year from 7,121 tonnes a year ago.
Month on month, imports increased by 35% from 4,653 tonnes in December 2012.
Major US epoxy resins producers include Dow Chemical, Huntsman and Momentive.
