HOUSTON (ICIS)--US methyl methacrylate (MMA) exports for February were up by 114% from the same month a year ago, according to data released by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Monday.

Exports increased to 10,926 tonnes from 5,101 tonnes in February 2012, largely to Belgium and Taiwan, with volumes shipped to Mexico up by 12% and volumes to Canada virtually flat.

Although MMA exports were up year over year, volumes were curtailed by reduced availability of acetone because of slackening demand for phenol and lower phenol production rates, sources said.

MMA imports, almost solely from Brazil, also tumbled in February to 283 tonnes from 611 tonnes one year earlier.

US March truck prices for MMA were $1.23-1.27/lb ($2,712-2,800/tonne, €2,088-2,156/tonne), as assessed by ICIS.

Major US MMA producers include Arkema, Dow Chemical, Evonik and Lucite.
