LONDON (ICIS)--Cobalt Technologies, a US developer of bio-based chemicals, on Monday announced a partnership with two Asian chemical companies for the development of a biomass-to-butadiene (BD) solution.
Cobalt did not provide the names of its partners in Asia.
Under the deal, Cobalt and the two companies, which made an equity investment in the US firm, plan to build a commercial-scale biorefinery in Asia, as well as build or license additional plants.
Technology development is expected to be completed in 2014 with construction of the first plant to follow, Cobalt said, citing indication that bio-based BD can be competitive with regular BD under current market conditions.
No financial details were released.
A Cobalt spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
BD is a key feedstock for styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), which is used in tyre manufacturing.
