Correction: In the ICIS story headlined "Alabama barge blast kills three, investigation continues" dated 25 April 2013, please read the headline as "…injures three…" instead of "…kills three…".HOUSTON (ICIS)--Federal, state and local agencies are continuing to respond to Wednesday night’s barge explosion that injured three on the ship channel in Mobile Bay in Alabama, the US Coast Guard (USCG) said on Thursday.
The incident was reported around 20:40 New Orleans time between the George Wallace Tunnel and the Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile Bay.
“A total of seven explosions have been reported, and the fire has been put out,” the Coast Guard said.
The two Kirby Inland Marine fuel barges involved in the incident were at the dock for repairs and were empty when they caught on fire, Kirby chairman Joe Pyne said.
The three people who were injured were not Kirby employees, he said, adding that the company will continue to be concerned about them.
The Coast Guard said the port is open, and the one-mile safety zone around the barge has been removed.
The military branch is investigating the cause of the incident.
