HOUSTON (ICIS)--US phenol exports for March rose by 18% from the same month a year ago, according to data released by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Monday.
Phenol exports increased to 9,170 tonnes in March from 7,745 tonnes in March 2012, indicating improved demand from Canada, which at 4,730 tonnes, took most of the month’s exports.
Mexico was the second-largest recipient at 929 tonnes, but reduced its year-over-year take by 39%.
Diminished phenol demand has forced production rates into the low 70% range, and reduced imports to 5,375 tonnes in March from 9,729 tonnes in March 2012.
However, March imports were up by 33% from the previous month, indicating some rebounding demand, sources said.
Major US phenol producers include Axiall, Dow Chemical, Haverhill Chemical, Honeywell, INEOS Phenol, SABIC Innovative Plastics and Shell Chemical.
