SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Guangxi Petrochemical, a subsidiary of PetroChina, is planning to bring on stream an 80,000 tonne/year methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) unit at Qinzhou in Guangxi province in September this year, a company source said on Monday.
Upon the start-up of the unit, the company will reserve all its raffinate C4 output for captive consumption, according to the source.
Raffinate C4 is a feedstock for MTBE.
Guangxi Petrochemical is the only raffinate C4 producer in Guangxi and its daily output is 800-900 tonnes, all of which are supplied to spot market at present.
“We have to secure other stable source for feedstock supply before Guangxi Petrochemical stops supplying,” said a source from a local deep processing company, adding that “the supply of import cargoes is unstable as it is not under a term contract”.
Guangxi Petrochemical has a crude distillation unit with a capacity of 10m tonnes/year. The unit largely produces 1,500-1,600 tonnes/day of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), with about 700 tonnes for residential use and the remaining for industrial use such as MTBE production.
