US PET exports plunge 30% year on year in April

NEW YORK (ICIS)--April US exports for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) dropped 30% year on year, according to trade data made available on Thursday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

April PET exports were down by 8,863 tonnes to 21,110 tonnes from 29,973 tonnes in April 2012.

Likewise, exports on a month on month basis fell 16% from 25,162 tonnes in March 2013 to 21,110 tonnes in April 2013.

On the import side, US PET imports were down 11% year on year from 45,438 tonnes in April 2012 to 40,302 tonnes in April 2013. Month on month PET imports were down only slightly by 1% from 40,696 tonnes in March 2013 to 40,302 tonnes in April 2013, according to ITC.

PET is used in plastic drinking bottles and in textiles.

PET producers in the US include DAK Americas, Indorama, Mossi & Ghisolfi (M&G) and Nan Ya Plastics.
