LONDON (ICIS)--European June acrylate esters contract prices have rolled over and increased by €10-20/tonne ($13-27/tonne) from the previous month amid steady demand and an upstream June propylene price increase, sources said on Wednesday.
Methyl acrylate (methyl-A) prices rolled over at €1,750-1,810/tonne free delivered (FD) northwest Europe (NWE), while ethyl acrylate (ethyl-A) June contract prices increased on both ends of its price range to €1,880-1,900/tonne FD NWE.
June butyl acrylate (butyl-A) contracts increased on the lower end of its price range to €1,790-1,800/tonne FD NWE, while 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (2-EHA) contract prices did the same and settled at €2,060-2,070/tonne FD.
There were also decreases of €20/tonne, as well as price rises of up to €35/tonne done for June esters.
The June European propylene contract price rose by €15/tonne to €1,040/tonne.
June acrylate esters demand is stable with that seen in May, and stable-to-soft compared with consumption levels in June 2012.
“Demand is good and volumes are in line with last year,” an acrylate esters producer said. “The coatings season is doing exactly what it was doing last year. Demand has increased through the year. It’s been a bit slower to start climbing, but we're seeing good demand for butyl acrylate (butyl-A), which goes into coatings.”
Butyl-A availability is limited, owing to production problems at a producer, sources said.
A consumer said it had received lower priced offers for July delivery, and added: "It appears to me now that the market for acrylate esters in reality is much longer than any producer would officially confirm."
Another buyer said: "It's a difficult market at the moment."
Acrylic acid (AA) and its esters are used in the manufacture of various plastics, coatings, adhesives and elastomers, as well as floor polishes and paints.
