HOUSTON (ICIS)--US silicones producer Momentive Performance Materials plans to double NXT* silane production capacity at its plant in Texas City, Texas, so it can meet demand for silica tyres, the company said on Friday.

The cost of the project was not disclosed.

Silica tyres have low rolling-resistance, Momentive said. Tyres, in turn, are made with styrene butadiene rubber (SBR).

Momentive is also expanding its operations in Leverkusen, Germany, it said. The expansion will allow Momentive to produce specialty silicones and silanes.
