LONDON (ICIS)--LANXESS is seeing a marked growth in demand for its milled short glass fibres for use in the automotives sector, the Germany-based specialty chemicals company said on Tuesday.
Particular growth is evident in demand for milled short glass fibres in the compounding of thermoplastics polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyurethane (PU), processed using reinforced reaction injection moulding (R-RIM), it added.
“Our milled short glass fibres are increasingly being used in R-RIM in place of natural mineral fibre fillers for producing bodywork parts in exclusive, small and medium-sized series,” said Martin Wiemer, marketing expert for glass fibres at LANXESS.
“They are gaining popularity for PTFE compounding when light-coloured components have to meet high optical requirements,” he added.
In the R-RIM process, a mixing head is used to mix the PU raw materials polyol and diisocyanate with a reinforcing material such as milled fibre, with the mixture then discharged into a mould, LANXESS said.
Large-scale car parts such as rear wings and panelling and mouldings for sills, bumpers and side members can be manufactured in this way, it added.
“More and more customers are telling us that they can meet [the hugely increased gap dimension requirements] more easily using our milled short glass fibres …due to their very narrow length distribution, which significantly improves the shrinkage behaviour of the components,” Wiemer said.
