US May LLDPE exports rose by 22% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) exports for May 2013 increased by 22% from the same month in 2012, according to data available from the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Monday.

Exports of LLDPE rose to 54,431 tonnes in May 2013 from 44,661 tonnes in 2012.

Mexico, Canada and China  purchased the most LLDPE from the US, with Mexico taking 42% of exports for a total of 22,658 tonnes. Exports to Canada and China also rose.    

US low density polyethylene (LDPE) exports for May increased by 8.1% from the same month in 2012, rising to 55,965 onnes from 51,770 tonnes in May 2012.

The top three destinations for US material were Canada, Mexico and China, together taking 49% of exports.

US high density polyethylene (HDPE) exports increased by 7.7% year on year in May, rising to 150,769 tonnes in 2013 from 139,947 tonnes in May 2012, according to the ITC.

Mexico, Canada and Brazil were the top destinations for US material, together accounting for 62% of all US exports.  Imports increased to Mexico, but decreased to Canada and Brazil.

US imports to China, which took the most material after Mexico, Canada and Brazil, nearly quadrupled in May, rising from 2,383 tonnes in 2012 to 9,138 tonnes in 2013.

Major US PE producers include Chevron Phillips Chemical, LyondellBasell, Dow Chemical, ExxonMobil, Westlake, INEOS, Total, Nova Chemicals and Formosa Plastics.
