HOUSTON (ICIS)--US chlor-alkali production dropped four percentage points in June from May to 83% of capacity, according to data released on Tuesday by The Chlorine Institute.
US chlor-alkali production was 912,609 tons (827,919 tonnes) of chlorine and 957,936 tons of caustic soda, the trade group said.
June’s drop-off in production follows three months when operating rates hovered in the high 80s to low 90s, reflecting increased demand for chlorine derivates in a rebounding US homebuilding sector.
More recently, however, market sources have said that US demand for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the main end-product in the chlorovinyls chain, has tapered off somewhat.
Major US chlor-alakli producers include Axiall, Dow Chemical, Formosa Plastics, Shintech, Occidental Chemical (OxyChem) and Westlake.
