Brazil Jan-Jun caustic soda consumption drops 2.9% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Brazil consumed 1.26m dry metric tonnes (dmt) of liquid caustic soda from January to June 2013, down by 2.9% from the 1.30m dmt consumed during H1 2012, the country’s association of chlor-alkali industries, Abiclor, reported on Friday.

Brazil’s domestic production of liquid caustic soda between January and June of 2013 was 693,342 dmt, 0.3% higher than the 691,535 dmt produced during the same period in 2012, Abiclor said.

Liquid caustic soda imports were 575,414 dmt in H1 2013, down by 6.8% from 617,444 dmt imported in H1 2012. The US was Brazil’s principal source, with 537,539 dmt imported from the US this year, corresponding to 93% share of imports into Brazil.

Major markets consuming liquid caustic soda in Brazil in 2013 are paper and cellulose with 164,117 dmt, chemical/petrochemical with 101,330 dmt, aluminium with 55,136 dmt and metallurgy with 36,765 dmt.

Demand for caustic soda in Brazil is stable amid balanced supply, sources said.

Caustic soda producers in Brazil are Braskem, Carbocloro and Dow Brasil.
