LONDON (ICIS)--Germany’s specialty chemicals major Evonik has formed a joint venture to mass-produce lightweight fibre-reinforced composite components for the automotive and aviation industries, it said on Tuesday.

Evonik’s partner in the LiteCon Advanced Composite Products joint venture is SECAR Technologie, an Austria-based developer and manufacturer of fibre-reinforced composite materials and components.

Evonik will hold 49% and SECAR 51% in LiteCon, which will be based in Honigsberg, southwest of Vienna, Austria.

"For years now, our products have supported efforts within the automotive and aviation industries to move toward lightweight construction, and LiteCon is the next step in our partnership with those industries," said Gregor Hetzke, president of Evonik’s Performance Polymers Business Unit.

"LiteCon unites our polymer expertise with SECAR’s prowess in composite development and manufacturing, so that our customers can use these synergies to their greatest possible advantage," Hetzke added.

Financial details were not disclosed.
