LONDON (ICIS)--European October acrylate esters contract prices have fallen from the previous month, on lower feedstock costs, sources said on Wednesday.

Prices dropped by €10-40/tonne ($14-54/tonne), depending on ester and on starting point. Acrylate esters include methyl acrylate (methyl-A), ethyl acrylate (ethyl-A), butyl acrylate (butyl-A) and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA).

Decreases on butyl-A were limited because of supply restrictions, while falls for methyl-A, ethyl-A and 2-EHA were largely at €30-40/tonne from September, on the back of the €40/tonne decrease in feedstock propylene.

Butyl-A sales control at Germany-based chemicals major BASF will remain in place until further notice, a source from the company said, adding that it was hoping to lift sales control at the beginning of November.

BASF implemented force majeure on butyl-A on 13 June because of production problems at its Ludwigshafen facility in Germany. It was lifted on 21 June and sales control was put in place.

Arkema implemented force majeure on acrylic acid (AA) and butyl-A from its Carling facility on 7 October, because of a mechanical failure. The plant has restarted and normal operations are slowly resuming, a source from the company confirmed on Wednesday.

“Things are going very well, so we don't think it will be in place for much longer,” the source added.

Demand is steady.

AA and its esters are used in the manufacture of various plastics, coatings, adhesives and elastomers, as well as floor polishes and paints.
