Obama signs bill to end US government shutdown, avoid debt default

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--US President Barack Obama on Thursday signed a bill to end the 16-day shutdown of the federal government, and lift its debt ceiling to prevent a default, according to media reports.

The bill –  which restores spending authority to the federal government until 15 January 2014 and raises the debt ceiling limit to a level that will allow federal borrowing until 7 February – was passed in the Senate on a vote of 81-18, and in the House of Representatives, on a vote of 285-144.
