Europe ACN 2013 consumption expected to be at parity with 2012

LONDON (ICIS)--European acrylonitrile (ACN) consumption in 2013 will be broadly stable across all end-uses compared with 2012, sources estimated on Friday.

Nevertheless, views on demand vary depending on end-use market.  Some players linked to the acrylic fibre end-use market estimated demand at up to 10% below 2012 levels.

Acrylic fibre consumption has been weak throughout 2013 because of poor macroeconomic conditions.

Despite broadly stable consumption in 2013, the average spread of spot prices versus feedstock costs in 2013 has been at its lowest level since ICIS began reporting on monthly propylene contract prices in 2009.

Unlike the contract market – where the spread against feedstock costs has remained healthy – spot volumes are predominantly sold to the acrylic fibre market. Contract volumes also count acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene and acrylamide as major end-uses.
