HOUSTON (ICIS)--US August exports of maleic anhydride (MA) were down 11% year on year, according to data made available on Monday from the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
August MA exports were 3,983 tonnes, down from 4,471 tonnes for the same month a year ago.
However, exports were 8.2% higher month on month from 3,683 tonnes in July 2013.
US MA remains somewhat attractive to overseas buyers because of a cost advantage for US producers stemming from US butane prices versus overseas benzene prices.
However, spot material was limited in the US for much of the third quarter owing to strong domestic demand and several unplanned plant outages.
Major US MA producers include Ashland, Flint Hills Resources, Huntsman and INVISTA.
