MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--US chlor-alkali production rates were steady in October, according to data released on Wednesday from a trade group.
The Chlorine Institute put October's chlor-alkali production rate at 79%, unchanged from September's level.
Chlorine gas production was 905,914 short tons (821,845 tonnes), up from 882,559 short tons in September but down 912,708 short tons in October 2012.
Caustic soda production in October was at 942,368 short tons, according to the institute, also increasing from the previous month's output but down year over year.
Maintenance outages taken by producers Shintech and Formosa have been the primary drivers for production rates below 80% for the past two months, market sources said.
The seasonal slowdown in the use of chlorine bleach for water treatment processes was another factor industry sources discussed in driving the lower production rates.
Companies reporting monthly data account for 93% of US capacity, according to the trade group.
Major US chlor-alkali producers include Dow Chemical, Formosa, Shintech, Axiall, Westlake and Occidental Chemical (OxyChem).
