LONDON (ICIS)--Merck KGaA will invest €80m ($108m) to build a new pharmaceuticals production facility in the greater Shanghai region, the Germany-based specialty chemicals and pharmaceuticals firm said on Friday.

The plant, in the Nantong Economical Technological Development Area, will focus on the bulk production and packaging of a number of drugs for diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and thyroid disorders.

Construction is scheduled to start in 2014, with start-up of commercial production expected for 2017, Merck said.

The facility would become the second largest pharmaceutical manufacturing site in the world for Merck KGaA’s biopharmaceuticals division, Allan Gabor, general manager and managing director of the division, said.
