SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Sinopec Maoming plans to bring on stream a new 100,000 tonne/year methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) unit at Maoming in Guangdong province at the end of 2014, the company in a statement said on Monday.
The construction of the unit, with an investment of yuan (CNY) 81.3m ($13.3m), has begun, it added.
The MTBE output from the new unit will be used as feedstock in the company’s planned isononyl alcohol unit, which will be located at the same site.
Sinopec Maoming’s MTBE capacity will hit over 200,000 tonnes/year after the completion of the new unit, the company added.
MTBE is widely used as gasoline additive in the world as it can boost the octane level. It is also an important raw material to produce high-purity isobutylene through cracking.
