SINGAPORE (ICIS)--South Korea’s LG Chem plans a 40-day turnaround at its Yeosu-based aromatics unit from mid-October next year, a company source said on Tuesday.

The aromatics plant – which can produce 240,000 tonnes/year of benzene; 96,000 tonnes/year of toluene; and 36,000 tonnes/year of solvent xylenes – is running at 100% amid sufficient feedstock pygas, the source said.

LG Chem’s other aromatics facility, located in Daesan, is also running at full capacity, the source said.

The Daesan-based unit can produce 200,000 tonnes/year of benzene; 100,000 tonnes/year of toluene; and 70,000 tonnes/year of solvent xylene.

“Recent narrow benzene-toluene spread prompts us to consider producing more toluene given the weak benzene prices comparatively,” the company source said.

At midday, the spot benzene-toluene spread stood at $100/tonne, according to ICIS.

At the current spread, it is not deemed profitable to feed toluene into toluene disproportionation (TDP) or hydrodealkylation (HDA) unit to produce benzene, market sources said.
