HOUSTON (ICIS)--US chemicals and materials firm PPG Industries on Friday officially opened a new facility for the production of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials at its site in Barberton, south of Cleveland, Ohio.

The plant, which began production earlier this month, supplies PPG’s strategic partner Universal Display, a developer and supplier of OLED technologies, materials and services to the display and lighting industries.

“This investment furthers our commitment in this growing technology area and expands our partnership with Universal Display,” CEO Charles Bunch said.

“As the market demand for energy-efficient, high-performance OLED displays and lighting devices continues to grow, we are better prepared today to meet their needs,” Bunch added.

David Mustine, managing director for polymers and chemicals at development agency JobsOhio, added that the partnership between PPG and Universal Display connects two of the state's targeted sectors — advanced manufacturing and polymers — to further strengthen Ohio's position in those industries.

The plant’s capacities and investment costs were not disclosed.
