TOKYO (ICIS)--Five men were killed, while more than 10 other people were injured by the explosion at Mitsubishi Materials’ 2,800 tonne/year polycrystalline silicon plant in Yokkaichi, Japan on Thursday afternoon, a police spokesperson said on Thursday.

The blast at the plant located in Mie prefecture occurred at around 14:00 Japan time (05:00 GMT), the spokesperson from the Yokkaichi Minami police station said over the phone.

The plant is currently shut, the police spokesperson said, adding that investigation will soon start on what caused the explosion.

The Yokkaichi plant’s polycrystalline silicon output is primarily for semiconductor production.
