Borouge to up PP, PE capacities by 2.5m t/y By Isha Jha

MUMBAI (ICIS news)--United Arab Emirates-based plastics producer Borouge plans to increase its polyolefins capacity by 2.5m tonnes/year by the end of 2014 and has initiated a feasibility study for the expansion project - Borouge 3, the company said on Monday.

The feasibility study would explore options to use the additional feedstock, that would become available after the planned expansions at upstream Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), to increase the company's polyethylene and polypropylene production capacities beyond the current Borouge 2 project, it added.

The proposed expansion would boost its total production capacity to 4.5m tonnes/year, and would help it meet the growing demands of polyethylene and polypropylene markets in the Middle East and Asia, it said.

The unit would be located alongside the existing Borouge 1 and Borouge 2 petrochemical complexes at Ruwais in Abu Dhabi, it added.

The facility had a current capacity of 600,000 tonnes/year of polyethylene and the Borouge 2 expansion, which would be ready for start up in 2010, would add 2m tonnes of polyolefins capacity based on a 1.5m tonne/year ethane cracker.

Borouge is a 40:60 joint venture between Borealis and Adnoc.
