Danish Gas Market

What are the next steps?

Customers will be notified via relevant channels. Messages around the new assessments will be posted on the ESGM report and on the ICIS Clarity platform throughout December 2023 and January 2024. Data as a Service customers will be notified separately through the usual channels around the changes and the names of the new files.

What exactly is changing?

ICIS is adding one daily assessment, the Danish gas Day-ahead assessment, and one weekly assessment, the Danish gas Weekend assessment. The Day-ahead assessment will be published every English working day, the Weekend assessment will be published every English working day preceding a bank holiday or a Weekend.

The new ICIS Danish gas assessments will follow the ESGM methodology.

What is happening?

ICIS will start assessing Danish gas contracts with delivery in 2024. From 29 December 2022 ICIS will publish the Danish gas Day-ahead contract on every working day and the Danish gas Weekend contract on the last working day of the week according to the British bank holiday calendar.

An updated version of the ESGM methodology containing the details of the new assessments will be uploaded on the ICIS website on 29 December.

What is the benefit of the new additions?

The new additions are expected to facilitate trading and attract liquidity on the Danish gas hub. Customers will be able to use the ICIS Danish gas assessments to mark position to market, for risk management, in pricing formulae of supply contracts, etc.

Who will be impacted?

All Gas Insight, Hindsight and Foresight customers.

Why are we doing this?

ICIS mission is to support its customers navigating changes in the energy markets and as such ICIS has been publishing European gas assessments for more than two decades. ICIS offering constantly expands to provide customers with assessments for established and emerging markets. From 2024, ICIS will add the Danish gas assessments to its series of assessments. This reflects liquidity developments in the Danish gas market following new infrastructure coming online and the fall in Russian flows to northwest Europe, which made Denmark an even more attractive transit hub for the region.

Belgian Gas Merger

Until when will ICIS continue to publish Belgian gas/Zeebrugge assessments?

ICIS will continue to publish Zeebrugge implied transitional assessments at least until 1 October 2024. Prior to that, ICIS will consult the market on whether these assessments will be needed after October 2024.

What does the merger mean for ICIS gas assessments?

As of 1 October 2023, ICIS will start publishing Belgian Zeebrugge Day-ahead, Weekend and Month+1 implied transitional assessments. These will be implied assessments based on the ICIS ZTP assessment published on the day minus transport costs from the Zeebrugge interconnection point to ZTP.

ICIS will also continue to publish the Heren Zeebrugge Day-ahead, Weekend, Spot Weekend, Monthly and Daily Month-Ahead indices after 30 September 2023. As Zeebrugge contracts will cease to trade, these indices will be calculated in line with the ESGM methodology provision applicable when there are no eligible trades.

ICIS will continue assessing ZTP contracts already included in ESGM and will expand the number of ZTP assessments to include the Day-ahead, Weekend (on the final working session of the week), BOM, three months ahead, two quarters ahead, two seasons ahead and one year ahead from 1 October 2023.

ICIS will also add the conversion of the ZTP assessments in p/th.

ICIS held a consultation on its minded position between June and July and the decision is based on market feedback collected before and during the consultation process.

What is happening to the Belgian gas market?

The Belgian gas transmission system operator Fluxys Belgium has decided to merge the two existing Belgian hubs into one. From 1 October 2023 the Zeebrugge gas hub will cease to exist and the ZTP will become the only Belgian gas hub.

For more information, see here.

When will ICIS stop publishing Zeebrugge gas assessments?

ICIS will continue to publish Zeebrugge implied transitional assessments at least until 1 October 2024. Prior to that, ICIS will consult the market on whether these assessments will be needed after October 2024.

Why will ICIS continue to publish Zeebrugge assessments and indices after October 2023?

As of 1 October 2023, ICIS will start publishing Belgian Zeebrugge Day-ahead, Weekend and Month+1 implied transitional assessments. These will be implied assessments based on the ICIS ZTP assessment published on the day minus transport costs from the Zeebrugge interconnection point to ZTP. Therefore, ICIS will continue to publish Zeebrugge assessments, however the methodology based on which the assessments will be calculated will reflect the fact that the assessments will not reflect a traded market.

Will ICIS stop publishing Zeebrugge (or Zee) assessments?

As of 1 October 2023, ICIS will start publishing Belgian Zeebrugge Day-ahead, Weekend and Month+1 implied transitional assessments. These will be implied assessments based on the ICIS ZTP assessment published on the day minus transport costs from the Zeebrugge interconnection point to ZTP. Therefore, ICIS will continue to publish Zeebrugge assessments, however the methodology based on which the assessments will be calculated will reflect the fact that the assessments will not reflect a traded market anymore.

Will there be any change after October 2023 for Zeebrugge assessments?

From 1 October 2023, ICIS will start publishing Belgian Zeebrugge Day-ahead, Weekend and Month+1 implied transitional assessments. These will be implied assessments based on the ICIS ZTP assessment published on the day minus transport costs from the Zeebrugge interconnection point to ZTP.
