HOUSTON (ICIS)–Saudi energy contractor Alfanar announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the several parties including the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to develop a green ammonia facility in Sokhna.

The company said it is a $3.5bn project and will use renewable energy sources and produce 500,000 short tons of green ammonia from 100,000 short tons of green hydrogen per year.

No timeline was revealed for the expected start of construction or the anticipated commencement of production from the new facility.

Others signing the MoU were the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).

“We have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Egypt and are thrilled to partner with such esteemed organizations of national importance on this program. Through this agreement, we will be developing a project to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia,” said Sabah Al-Mutlaq, Alfanar Global Development chairman of the board.
