Methyl isobutyl ketone Overview Transcript
MIBK is methyl isobutyl ketone. It is a solvent that is derived from acetone and other chemicals. It goes into a wide range of applications from consumer goods and pesticides, pharmaceuticals to industrial uses such as the production of paints, rubber products and machinery.
Some of the household products containing MIBK include things like surface cleaners, laundry starch, spray paint, shoe polish, varnish and so on.
The big commercial applications would be in the paints and coatings sector so the housing and construction industries and automobile sectors are really quite important to MIBK demand. In the last couple of years, those areas have not been doing so well. So, we consider MIBK to be a fairly mature market

Methyl isobutyl ketone: Market overview
Asia’s methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) prices are poised for decreases in the first quarter of 2014 on the back of weak demand from downstream solvent applications and rubber tyre sectors and the seasonal lull during the Lunar New Year holiday, industry sources said. Demand may improve after mid-February when buyers return to work after the holiday, market sources said. In southeast Asia, market sentiments are also affected by the weak regional currencies and political uncertainty in some countries. Most buyers remain cautious in their purchasing decisions until elections are over.
MIBK prices are at their lowest prices since February 2013 with a general downward trend expected going into the first quarter of 2014. Consumption of MIBK is unlikely to see any huge increase, if any at all, because of a weak macroeconomic environment. However, some sources said it is too early in the year for any clear indication on demand and the market is also awaiting news of a potential feedstock acetone price increase to assess the price trajectory.
It remains to be seen whether several producers of US MIBK will implement price increases during the first quarter of 2014. Several producers are asking for increases, which are tied to higher costs of feedstock propylene. However, sources in the US market have said that MIBK has been balanced enough to not warrant significant increases. MIBK players in the US are also keeping an eye on truck acetone contract prices, which appear poised for increases. Several acetone price increase nominations were made for December, in the range of 4-10 cents/lb.

Methyl Isobutyl Ketone Methodology
About Methyl isobutyl ketone
Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) is an excellent solvent for resins used in the production of surface coatings. The main solvent applications are in transportation, refurnishing and marine coatings, construction coatings, wood coatings and metal coatings.
MIBK is also used in rubber chemicals for the production of tyres, as a solvent in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and adhesives, and for specialised metallurgical extraction.
The two main processes for making MIBK are from acetone condensation and isopropanol (IPA).
MIBK is a colourless liquid with a characteristic ketone odour. It is highly flammable and vapours may travel to the source of ignition and flashback.
