Updated to Q4 2014
US soda ash producers pushed a $14-15/ton price increase for 2015 domestic annual contracts as the US economic recovery strengthened and they continued to gain share in global markets.
Global production capacity, estimated at about 55m tonnes/year, is expected to be reduced by 2.3m tonnes between mid-2013 and mid-2015.
Most of that has already closed and US producers are gaining higher prices in Asia and market share in Europe and Africa.
Most of the growth in demand for soda ash comes from developing markets, particularly those countries that produce finished manufactured goods, such as glass and soap, back to the US and other developed countries.
US producers, who make soda ash from the naturally occurring mineral, trona, possess a significant cost advantage over soda ash made from chemical processes. It has been the older, less efficient of the synthetic plants that have closed.
US producers continued in their gains to improve production volumes to capitalise on the lowered international production and are on track to break 2013’s production record of 11.5m tonnes. So far this year they have produced 8.66m tonnes, up from 8.53 million tonnes during the first nine months of 2013, an increase of 130,000 tonnes.
