Updated to Q1 2015
European jet kerosene demand was seasonally subdued in the first quarter (Q1) of 2015 as the winter travelling season ended in January. Despite crude futures having more than halved since Q4 2014, airlines were unable drop air ticket prices to spur demand as most remain hedged for variable periods of time.
Buyers were purchasing bare minimum volumes, with crude futures softening rapidly early in the quarter, in the hope of achieving more competitive prices at a later date. This was reflected in the largely inactive barge and cargo trading window between January and early March.
Availability was mostly stable at high levels throughout the quarter but at the end of March, despite virtually non-existent demand, stock levels dropped rapidly. This suggests players with jet kerosene in storage were utilising it instead of buying additional product.
