HOUSTON (ICIS)–It is unknown if Braskem’s polyolefins production will be disrupted by a fire at its Capuava complex in Maua, Sao Paulo state, a source familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

The fire, which started in the early evening on Wednesday, injured six people working near the site, the company said in an update. Five workers were treated and released the same day, while the sixth remained under observation at a hospital.

“The incident occurred at our plant, UNIB 3,” the source said on Thursday.

The plant was shut down to ensure safety and security. Braskem did not say when it could resume operations.

Braskem said Capuava has a capacity of 1.6m tonnes/year and the main product is ethylene. Capuava produces olefins, aromatics and low-density polyethylene (LDPE), according to ICIS plants and projects.
