Abengoa Netherlands bankrupt, ethanol plant shut

LONDON (ICIS)–Spain-based energy group Abengoa’s Netherlands business filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday and its Rotterdam ethanol plant, the largest in Europe, has been forced to close, the company’s administrator said in a statement.
Abengoa Bioenergy Netherlands BV, a holding company for the huge Europoort ethanol plant, filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday at 14:00 (CET), according to a press statement from Borsboom & Hamm, which has been appointed the firm’s administrator.
The plant is closed, removing around 380,000 tonnes/year of ethanol capacity from the market, and it is not clear for how long.
“The factory is expected to be up and running again on a continuous basis on short notice,” said the statement.
