Cyclohexane: Market overview
Updated to Q3 2017
The European cyclohexane (CX) contract delta settled at €143/tonne in the second quarter, an increase of €11/tonne from the first quarter. The delta reflected greater demand for CX in a tight market. At the end of the second quarter, the European CX market was short and heavily reliant on imports, having failed to recover from the closure of SABIC’s UK facility.
For the third quarter, supply availability is expected to remain uncertain and dependent on imports as well as the smooth running of production facilities. Production problems outside of Europe also added to supply shortages during the last quarter. Material is short globally, and this situation is expected to continue. Downstream markets also face tightness on the back of CX supply constraints. Traders new to the market may come online this quarter, depending on arbitrage possibilities. At present, Asian, Middle Eastern and American product are the largest imports into Europe. The third quarter CX delta contract settled at an increase, due to limited supply and strong demand.

Cyclohexane (CX) is a colourless mobile liquid with a mild etheral odour. It is flammable and immiscible with water.
The major outlet for CX is in the production of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone, which are then used mainly to make intermediates such as adipic acid (used mainly to make nylon 6,6 fibre) and caprolactam (to make nylon 6) respectively.
Cyclohexane is also utilised as a solvent for lacquers and resins; paint and varnish remover; in the extraction of essential oils; in analytical chemistry for molecular weight determination; in the manufacture of cyclohexanol, cyclohexyl chloride, nitrocyclohexane, solid fuel for camp stoves; synthetic rubber solvent; in industrial recrystallisation of steroids and in fungicidal formulations.
Smaller outlets for CX include its use as a solvent, a reaction diluent and in chemical synthesis. It is also a starting material for KA Oil (cyclohexanone-cyclohexanol mixture) and can substitute benzene in some applications.
