Cyclohexane overview Transcript
Cyclohexane is a chemical that is mostly used really as a feedstock for other chemicals. The feedstocks for cyclohexane, there’s really one, its benzene. Cyclohexane production is mostly based on the catalytic hydrogenation of benzene because of its simplicity and high efficiency.
Nearly all cyclohexane in North America is consumed internally. These products are mostly used to make nylon 6, or nylon 6,6 or even caprolactam.
The key driver in this market, of course is benzene, which is factored in to an industry-based formula which is used by ICIS.
ICIS has a contract price for the US which is updated monthly.

Cyclohexane: Market overview
Updated to Q1 2017
Supply in the European cyclohexane (CX) market is tight at the start of the quarter, on the back of a production problem and drop in imports. There had been talk in the market of a production problem for some weeks, with no confirmation available from the producer in question. Spot prices were heard at a higher level because of the supply shortage, with supply expected to be tight for the rest of January. SABIC is expected to stop CX production at its facility in Wilton, UK, at the start of the first quarter, although confirmation from the producer is pending. Once production has stopped, the producer is expected to continue to supply the market from stock until inventories dry up. Contractual buyers are unaffected by the supply tightness, with imports also still arriving for material agreed under contract. The Lunar New Year in Asia at the end of January is also expected to impact import levels, with buyers saying they expect a further drop. With benzene prices higher in other regions in December this left Europe an unattractive export destination, leading to the drop in imports. Demand is at a reasonable level and in line with expectations for the time of year.

Cyclohexane (CX) is a colourless mobile liquid with a mild etheral odour. It is flammable and immiscible with water.
The major outlet for CX is in the production of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone, which are then used mainly to make intermediates such as adipic acid (used mainly to make nylon 6,6 fibre) and caprolactam (to make nylon 6) respectively.
Cyclohexane is also utilised as a solvent for lacquers and resins; paint and varnish remover; in the extraction of essential oils; in analytical chemistry for molecular weight determination; in the manufacture of cyclohexanol, cyclohexyl chloride, nitrocyclohexane, solid fuel for camp stoves; synthetic rubber solvent; in industrial recrystallisation of steroids and in fungicidal formulations.
Smaller outlets for CX include its use as a solvent, a reaction diluent and in chemical synthesis. It is also a starting material for KA Oil (cyclohexanone-cyclohexanol mixture) and can substitute benzene in some applications.
