Updated to Q2 2018
Upstream European benzene supply for much of Q2 2018 was long and thereby reduced the likelihood of ethylbenzene availability difficulties. Benzene tightness did occur temporarily for prompt delivery at the end of the quarter due to a disruption to production. The European benzene market was also supplied by imports from Turkey, India and the Middle East due to length in the latter regions.
The maintenance season downstream from ethylbenzene in the styrene market began in February and finished in late May. There was limited styrene supply, which would have had an influence on ethylbenzene consumption. After the turnarounds finished, styrene availability balanced. Demand was quiet in the face of public holidays in May. By June styrene demand quietened ahead of seasonally lower consumption in the summer.
