SAO PAULO (ICIS)–SABIC has launched a distribution hub and logistics centre to help meet growing demand in Brazil for its polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) materials, the company announced at this year’s Feiplastic.

The distribution and logistics hub will be based in Diadema, Sao Paulo, and will allow SABIC to more effectively service its Brazilian customer base.

The company is also building new silos at its facility in Campinas, Brazil.

“We are serving an ever-expanding base of customers in this region and are committed to nurturing and building these relationships and delivering with dependability for the long term,” said Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh, executive vice president for SABIC’s Petrochemicals business.

As part of its commitment to the region, SABIC unveiled several regional firsts at its booth at this year’s Feiplastic. These prototypes include dedicated solutions for the caps and closures industry, material technology for nonwoven and light personal hygiene items as well as a line of PP compounds for use in the automotive industry.

SABIC anticipates healthy plastics demand growth in the Latin American region in line with demographic trends and a rising middle-class population.

SABIC is building a steam cracker in the US Gulf with joint venture partner ExxonMobil. The cracker will provide feedstock to a new ethylene glycol (EG) unit as well as two new PE units.  According to SABIC, the project is in the permitting phase.

PE is the most widely used plastic in the world, primarily found in packaging including plastic bags, plastic films and geomembranes.

PP is used for packaging, ropes, carpets, plastic parts, loudspeakers and automotive parts.

Feira Internacional do Plastico (Feiplastic) takes place on 22-26 April in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
