Typhoon Nanmadol makes landfall in Japan, flooding advisory issued for Tokyo

SINGAPORE (ICIS)–Typhoon Nanmadol made landfall on Japan’s southernmost island of Kyushu on Sunday, bringing torrential rains and strong winds as it moves towards the main island of Honshu, with a flooding advisory issued for capital city Tokyo.

At 01:40 GMT on Monday, Nanmadol was near Fukuoka city, packing maximum sustained winds of 126 kilometres per hour, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The typhoon is expected to move through central Japan and reach Tokyo on Tuesday, maintaining much of its strength as it moves.

Nanmadol is expected to dump as much as 40 centimetres of rain in parts of Kyushu as it moves along the west coast of the main island of Honshu.

Close to 286,640 homes were without power in Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima, according to Kyushu Electric Power Transmission & Distribution.

At least 4m people have been told to evacuate their homes in Kyushu, with hundreds of domestic flights in and out of the region cancelled, according to Japanese media reports.

Strong winds brought on by Typhoon Nanmadol also caused power outages in southeastern South Korea, and are expected to come closest to the port city of Busan on Monday morning before moving east.

Around 100 households in Busan and Ulsan suffered power outages, while some 50 vessels on 43 routes have been suspended, according to local media reports.
