LONDON (ICIS)–Aquaterra Energy and Seawind Ocean Technology have signed an agreement in order to develop an offshore floating wind and renewable hydrogen project off the coast of Italy, Aquaterra said in a press release 26 September.

The offshore wind farm is expected to have a capacity of 3.2GW and is due to be online by 2027.

“Initial field development of the first asset called HyMed is expected to produce 3.2GW of electricity, of which more than 1GW will be green [renewable] hydrogen once production units are fully operational,” the press release said.

Aquaterra expects that the hydrogen produced from “Italian ultra-deep waters” will be moved onshore either via pipeline or by vessels “to global markets.”

“The project is currently in its first phase of permitting, with the grid connection and the environmental impact assessments well under way,” the press release said.
