LONDON (ICIS)–OMV Petrom confirmed on 22 May that it received funding for construction of renewable hydrogen production at its Petrobrazi oil refinery located in southern Romania.

The project will use the €39million funding from the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (NPRR) for the construction of an electrolyser, with the total investment at the facility estimated at €74million.

The NRRP allocates funding through the European Union via the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) which entered into force in February 2021.

According to the Romanian government, the country is aiming to have at least 100MW of electrolysis capacity producing at least 10,000tonnes/year of renewable hydrogen.

Data from ICIS showed that Romanian hydrogen demand would rise to 9TWh by 2025 and to 12TWh by 2030, with the majority of demand (7TWh) coming from the chemicals sector.
